The Electron Ion Collider with polarized beams and a large variation in the nuclear beams has been embraced by the US nuclear science community as embodying the vision for reaching the next QCD frontier.

The EIC will provide unique capabilities for the study of QCD beyond those available at existing facilities and complementary to those being planned for the next generation accelerators around the world.

I will present the highlights of the science case for this facility and give brief overview of its status and path towards realization.
