The trainee will analyze exoplanetary transits observed with different instruments and wavelengths in a consistent way.
Exoplanetary transits are revealed by periodic drops in the observed stellar flux. Their exact morphology depends mainly on the planet-to-star radii ratio, orbital parameters and stellar limb-darkening effect. Often, a set of limb-darkening coefficients is derived from stellar models, but their empirical validation is limited by the low signal-to-noise ratio, instrumental systematic effects, and strong correlations between physical parameters.
Multiwavelength observations can be used to reduce the correlations between physical parameters, if the instrumental effects are minimized.
The trainee will analyze UV/visible and infrared transit observations using the SEA BASS method (Morello, G. 2018, AJ, 156, 175) with state-of-the-art algorithms to correct for the instrumental effects. Future developments of the SEA BASS method and/or instrumental algorithms may be considered.
This project is an important contribution to the high-precision spectroscopy of exoplanetary atmospheres with the next generation of space missions such as JWST and ARIEL.
