Structure formation in the Universe

A numerical simulation of the evolution of large structure in the Universe.

From the Big Bang to galaxies and stars, the Universe has been evolving for 13 billion years. Dapnia researchers want to understand how matter was distributed in the first moments, and how galaxies and clusters originated and evolved from this initial state.

Cosmology and structure formation in the Universe
The study of the large-scale structures of the Universe has developed dramatically over the past two decades, since the discovery of temperature fluctuations in the cosmic microwave background by the COBE satellite team in 1992 (2006 Nobel Physics ... More »

Galaxy formation and evolution
Observational Cosmology has reached an important turning point. After years of seeking the parameters that govern the evolution of the Universe, there seems to be increasing consensus in acknowledging the dominant influence of dark matter on baryons ... More »
