Herschel arrives at ESA
img The Herschel Flight Model (FM) spacecraft of the satellite Herschel has arrived on January, 2008 at ESTEC, the European Space Research and Technology Centre located in Noordwijk, The Netherlands. ESTEC is an ESA centre for the testing of space vehicles and their subsystems. The elements of the satellite Herschel which have just arrived at ESTEC are the cryostat equipped with its scientific instruments and the satellite’s service module. They will soon be joined by the last missing elements: the telescope and the solar the solar arrays. The satellite will undergo during the next months a whole series of tests before being forwarded to the Kourou space centre at the end of the summer 2008. In particular the satellite is going to be gradually cooled (to allow the tests of instruments in the conditions of observation) and will never be returned to the ambient temperature. The launch of the satellite Herschel by a rocket Ariane V is fixed on October 31st, 2008.
