Oscillations of magnetic white dwarfs
Simulation of instabilities at the surface of magnetic white dwarfs (short version 1min03s)

Simulation of instabilities at the surface of magnetic white dwarfs (long version 3min06s)
This computer simulation shows the matter captured from a companion star and falling to the surface of a highly magnetized white dwarf (polar). The matter is channeled in a "accretion column" of only a few hundred kilometers radius. A shock wave is formed above the surface of the white dwarf where the temperature can reach a billion degrees. Strong oscillations of the height of the shock produces very rapid variations of the X-ray luminosity.

LE MONDE SCIENCE ET TECHNO (14 septembre 2016)
A Franco-Anglo-American scientific collaboration has, for the first time, reproduced in the laboratory the violent shock produced when the material falls on the pole of a white dwarf.
