Applications are invited for an excellent opportunity to work jointly on the CERN experiments CMS at the Large Hadron Collider and COMPASS at the Super Proton Synchrotron.
The applicant will work on the data analysis of massive dimuon pair production in hadronic collisions on both CMS and COMPASS experiments. The analysis includes the treatment of Drell-Yan and quarkonium production data, as well as the associated Monte-Carlo simulations. Should there be an interest from the candidate, this position also offers the possibility to work with local theorists on the phenomenology directly related to the experimental analyses.
The applicant will be based in the Paris area, at the Laboratoire Leprince-Ringuet (LLR) at École Polytechnique (Palaiseau) and Nucleon Structure Laboratory (LSN) at CEA (Saclay). The appointment is foreseen for 2 years (with possible extension to 3 years) and is expected to start between July and November 2019. The successful applicant will become a full member of both COMPASS and CMS collaborations at CERN. Regular trips to CERN for presentations and discussions with physicists from the two collaborations are expected.
The LLR laboratory is specialized in particle physics and high-energy gamma astronomy. Physicists from LLR take active part in several major experiments, including CMS, HESS, T2K. The LSN laboratory has strong commitments in experimental and phenomenological investigations of the hadron structure. Physicists from LSN play key roles in experiments at CERN and JLAB, and participate in future projects like EIC in the US and Compass++/Amber at CERN. Applicants should hold a recent PhD degree in experimental nuclear or high-energy physics, significant expertise in data analysis, good knowledge of detector/instrumentation matters and excellent programming skills. Prior experience with C++, Python and CERN software tools like ROOT and GEANT will be highly appreciated, as well as the ability to take on responsibilities in an independent manner and experience of working in an internationally collaborative environment.
