Athena will be the next ESA X-ray observatory (2032).
The proposed work aims at quantifying the power of Athena to constrain cosmological models, by means of numerical simulations of galaxy clusters.
Sujet détaillé/Full description
Contexte:

But du stage:

Context:
The proposed work is a follow-up of the XMM-XXL survey (http://irfu.cea.fr/xxl).
The main goal ist to extract cosmological parameters, in a self-consistent way, from a survey of X-ray clusters of galaxies. Observations are obtained by the ESA XMM-observatory.
The principle relies on the fact that the number of clusters formed as a function of time, critically depends on the Dark Matter and Dark Energy properties (the latter causing the expansion to accelerate - Nobel prize 2011). X-ray observations provide information on the mass and on the distance of clusters.
ATHENA is the successor of XMM and is the 2nd Large Mission selected in the context of the ESA Cosmic Vision programme. It will be launched at the beginning of the 2030 and will be much more sensitive than XMM.

Goal of the internship:
The goal is to perform and analyse simulations of an X-ray sky survey by ATHENA (WFI instrument). First step will be to detect the galaxy clusters and then, to extract the cosmological information from the cluster population.
The subsequent cosmological analysis will be performed by means of an innovative method (ASpiX), based on a forward modeling, which enables the monitoring of many systematic uncertainties.
While the EUCLID mission (optical+infrared) will provide very accurate constraints on the cosmology, these will mainly come form the z=0-1 range (for clusters). With ATHENA, in X-rays, it will possible to systematically probe for the first time a huge volume of the universe at z=1-2, hence, to inventory the cluster population at this cosmic epoch. This is especially important, since the effect of Dark Energy on structure formation is expected to be dominant at this time. We shall test various, more of less conventional, cosmological models.
This project is part of the topics selected for the ATHENA Red Book. The results to be obtained during the internship will be included in an article, which will be published in a special issue of Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Working environment:
All computer programmes are available (X-ray image simulation and processing, cosmological analysis).
The programming language is Python.
The computation are performed at the IN2P3 Computer Center in Lyon.
