We propose a theoretical and experimental study of a new type of nuclear radioactivity that remains to be discovered: the double alpha decay. The internship will allow to become familiar with the theoretical and experimental aspects in view of new experiments that could lead to the discovery of this new radioactivity.

More than a century after the discovery of radioactivity by H. Becquerel, many decay modes have been discovered: alpha, beta, fission, neutron, proton, double-proton, double-beta, cluster, etc. A tremendous amount of work has been done both theoretically and experimentally. Discovering a new type of radioactivity is therefore complex but exciting. The recent prediction of a new mode of radioactivity by the team responsible for the present project [1], the symmetrical emission of two alphas by the nucleus, makes it possible to envisage its detection. Indeed, the predicted lifetimes, although very long, are of the same order of magnitude as those of other rare radioactivities such as cluster emission.

The internship will allow the student to become familiar with theoretical calculations and experimental techniques. The student will study microscopic methods for calculating various types of radioactivity. He will learn how to use the software. The experimental part will allow a first approach of the alpha detection using Si segmented detectors: detectors, electronics, acquisition and analysis.

A good background in theoretical (N-body problem) and experimental nuclear physics is required. The student will be supervised by Ch. Theisen, experimentalist at CEA/Irfu (Saclay), E. Khan, theoretician at IJCLab (Orsay), and by J.-P. Ebran, theoretician at CEA/DAM. The continuation with a thesis will be proposed with, according to the competences and interest of the candidate, a main focus either theoretical or experimental, in a rich and stimulating international context (CERN).
