We review the current experimental and theoretical status of the proton spin crisis. This includes a discussion of the role of gluon exchange currents and chiral symmetry in modifying the naive expectations within a relativistic quark model. Lattice QCD also has an important role to play but there are a number of important uncertainties in the state of the art calculations that are not widely appreciated and we also discuss these in some detail.
