Workshop on the explosion of Core Collapse Supernovae  
img Since Baade and Zwicky first suggested in 1939 that supernovae are energized by the collapse of a massive star to a neutron star, understanding how things really work in detail has been one of the greatest difficulties for theorists. Three mechanisms are currently considered: re-energization of the shock via neutrino heating, oscillations of the neutron star giving rise to acoustic power, or magneto-rotational phenomena. Simulations of the first two mechanisms have benefited from the recent discovery of a generic hydrodynamic instability developing during the first second of the explosion. Thierry Foglizzo (CEA/SAp) and Thomas Janka (MPA, Munich) gathered the major actors in this area of research for a workshop held at the Henri Poincaré Institute in Paris, June 30 - July 11, 2008. The various teams involved (American, Japanese, German, Swiss and French) were thus able to debate their most recent results during two weeks.
Talks and related discussions are now available online. For the very first time indeed, the proceedings include video movies filmed during the sessions.
