An important step toward a better understanding of the high energy emission from gamma-ray bursts was just been reached with the detection by the MAGIC cherenkov telescopes of highly energetic photons from a distant gamma-ray burst, GRB 190114C (z=0.42 or 7 billion km). MAGIC (Major Atmospheric Gamma Imaging Cherenkov) is a system of two telescopes, each of 17 meters in diameter, located at the El Roque de los Muchachos Observatory, La Palma, Canary Islands.

In the journal Science Advances on 1 January 2016, astronomers from the Astrophysical Department (SAp) of the CEA-Saclay and Universities of Vienna, British Columbia, and Sydney as well as the Max Planck Institute, presented a new method for measuring the surface gravity of a star (which depends on its mass and diameter) with an accuracy of a few percent. Moreover, this method is also applicable to low luminosity stars for which the current instruments do not have sufficient sensitivity to perform usual seismic studies. Read more (in French)...

The European commission invests 2,5 millions euros in a new 'Marie Curie formation network' entitled "The Universe of the Black Holes", that will be part of the 7th cooperation program of the European Union. This network will link the A.I.M. laboratory (Université Paris Diderot / CEA Saclay / CNRS-INSU) , europeans universities and several other institutes associated for the formation of a new generation of doctorate students and post-doctorate scientists in astrophysics and spatial sciences.
