The highest magnetic field currently obtainable with superconducting magnets is determined by the critical current density and yield strength of existing superconductors. In order to improve their electrical and mechanical properties, extensive basic research and industrial developments for new superconductors have been carried out in Japan. They will be introduced by focusing on Nb3Sn, Nb3Al, MgB2 and BSCCO conductors.
