Since Baade and Zwicky first suggested in 1939 that supernovae are energized by the collapse of a massive star to a neutron star, understanding how things really work in detail has been one of the greatest difficulties for theorists. Three mechanisms are currently considered: re-energization of the shock via neutrino heating, oscillations of the neutron star giving rise to acoustic power, or magneto-rotational phenomena.
