Modelling of hadronisation in Event Generators - From low energy e+e- to high energy heavy ion collision

Concentrating on general-purpose event generators such as Pythia and Herwig, I will describe the evolution of hadronization modeling, from simple string and cluster fragmentation in the eighties to recent developments describing collective effects in hadron production in hot and dense systems.
