Caribou

For mechanical engineering activities, the open-space layout of the mechanical design office ensures the rapid exchange of information required from the earliest stages with physicists, the circulation of know-how, the continuity of skills and a group dynamic consistent with the department's missions. Differentiating skills for the design and manufacture of special components such as superconducting magnets, accelerator cavities, sensing system components and space components have thus been developed within the institute. In addition, specificities on very specific subjects such as multi-scale simulations (see the AS4 highlight sheet) or the simulation of cryogenic temperature tribology phenomena, special links have developed with academic laboratories (ENS Cachan, Centrale, Mines, etc.) via the supervision of study projects, ANR projects or informal contacts.

Within the framework of general instrumentation activities, the SIS has developed specific technological domains recognized within the collaborations

In the instrumental electronics laboratory, three areas of differentiating know-how are internationally recognized:

  • expertise in electronics applied to superconducting magnet protection systems (see AS5 highlight sheet);
  • know-how to design the Low Level RF electronics necessary to regulate RF electric fields in accelerator cavities (DB patent 11350);
  • Cryogenic instrumentation skills to systematically position itself as a stakeholder in all superconducting magnet developments.

At LDISC, developments are carried out under Siemens, Linux, VXWorks, Windows platforms. The laboratory thus offers great flexibility to adapt to the different specific needs in the Irfu themes: magnets, cryogenic or cryomagnetic test stations, measuring stations, detectors, optical telescope systems, etc. With this know-how and the development of reliable and efficient specific tools (Nutmeg® : see highlight AP5 sheet), the LDISC can be brought to intervene in other fields such as the environment (Icos project) and fusion and ESS (Epics, see highlight AP5 sheet).

The "Electrical Engineering Integration" laboratory carries out specific recognized activities in the following fields:

  • power electronics, supporting superconducting magnet supplies and accelerator elements ;
  • development and implementation of complex electromechanical systems (see highlight sheet SU11) ;
  • definition and deployment of complex instrumentation systems such as test stations (W7X, JT-60SA, etc.), accelerator components (Iphi, Ifmif Injector, Fair, etc.) and measurement stations (Caribou, Icos).
