Laboratory Dynamics of Stars, (Exo)-planets and their Environment
LDE3

Study the internal and external dynamics of the Sun , stars and their interactions with orbiting planets for a dynamic view of the stars and planets in their space environment.

The Sun and stars are cosmic objects possessing a wide variety of dynamical processes going from turbulent convection, excitation of waves of various types, to the intense surface magnetism and to the interaction with their environment through tides or a wind of particles. It is thus necessary to go beyond a static vision of stars by taking into account the nonlinear physical processes at play in those cosmic objects while taking them out of their isolation, by considering their interaction with their environment.

The Laboratory Dynamics of Stars, (Exo)-planets and their Environment (LDE3) will study the internal and external dynamics of the Sun, stars and of their interactions with their circumstellar environment.
These scientific objectives are common with those of the Service of Astrophysics, the UMR 7158 AIM and of the Research institute on the Fundamental Laws of the Universe (IRFU) of Fundamental Research Division (DRF) at CEA-Paris-Saclay, in particular the program " birth, life and death of stars ".

The laboratory LDE3 is composed of 3 poles: Interpretation, Observations and Instrumentation.

  • The Interpretation pole rests on theory (from semi-analytical developments) and high performance multi-D numerical simulations, in particular with the code ASH.
  • The Observation pole rests on multi-wavelengths observations (Herschel, XMM, IRAM) and seismology of the Sun (SoHO, GONG) and stars (CoRoT, Kepler).
  • The Instrumentation pole is centered on seismology (SoHO/GOLF), infrared (JWST/MIRI, Ariel) and the study of solar particles (STIX-Solar Orbiter).

The LDEE laboratory has numerous scientific collaborations with teams based in France (LESIA, IRAP, LUTH, IPAG) or abroad (Boulder, Palo Alto, Santa Cruz, Geneve, Tenerife, London, Kyoto, Tokyo, to cite only a few).

Several members of the LDE3 were laureate of ERC Grants: in 2007, A.S.Brun was awarded an ERC grant STARS2 (Simulations of the Turbulence, the Activity and the Rotation of the Sun and stars) (www.stars2.eu). In September 2014, following the research done on solar magnetism during the STARS2 project, ERC has granted a Proof of Concept (PoC) grant to develop state-of-the-art solar activity prediction tools: the SolarPredict projet. In 2015, S. Mathis was awarded a ERC grant SPIRE to study angular momentum transport in star-planet systems. In 2018, A.S. Brun (with 3 other colleagues) were awarded a prestigious ERC synergy grant, the only one in Universe Sciences for that call. The WHOLE SUN project seeks to built an integrated view of our star from deep down in the nuclear core up to the corona and the global solar code of the 21st century.

P.O. Lagage was awarded a H2020 project to study exoplanets atmosphere and prepare JWST and Ariel missions: ExoplanetsA

Recently three research prizes have been given to members of the LDE3:
Prix la Recherche en Astrophysique 2011 to A.S. Brun, Prix l'Oral France 2012 for young woman researchers to F. Remus., Prix SF2A for best PhD in astrophysics in 2013 to Antoine Strugarek, Supercomputing 2017 price to A.S Strugarek and A.S. Brun
