Accelerator Driven Systems (ADS) are Generation IV reactors in which a sub-critical core is driven by a high-energy proton accelerator followed by a neutron source. They are unusually safe and effective, particularly for incinerating long-lived nuclear waste by transmutation
SACM is involved in the various European development and R&D programs on ADS-type high-energy proton accelerators meeting the specifications of MYRRHA, the Belgian demonstrator project at CEN-SCK. Since 2001 under FP5 until 2015, and up to the Horizon 2020 MYRTE program, SACM has contributed to the design and definition of the linear accelerator. The main challenge is the exceptionally low number of unwanted beam interruptions required by the reactor (<0.1 per day). SACM is continuing its involvement through various research initiatives including code development, beam dynamics and special diagnostics development.
