An international team, led by the CEA and its partners from the Japanese research institute RIKEN, was able to experimentally determine the structure of a zirconium nucleus very rich in neutrons (110Zr), a first that calls into question the theories used until then. Produced by the Japanese RIBF accelerator and analyzed using the MINOS detector, this heavy core proves to be more deformed than what the models predicted. This work, conducted in collaboration with the CNRS and the Universities of Lyon and Paris-Sud, was published on January 18 in Physical Review Letters and is the subject of a suggestion by the publisher.
