A European collaboration, led by INFN (Instituto Nazionale di Fisica Nucleare, Italy) and involving CEA, is studying technological solutions for designing superconducting magnets for future spacecraft. Its aim is to determine the existing tracks and developments to be carried out to manufacture a "magnetic shield" protecting astronauts from cosmic radiation during long space voyages. Called Space Radiation Superconducting Shield (SR2S), and funded by the European Union, this project will be the subject of an expert meeting at the CEA center in Saclay on June 17.
