Within the framework of an observation program conducted with the Hubble Space Telescope, a team associating the CEA, the CNRS and the University Paris-Diderot discovered the birth of a supercluster of stars within a very distant galaxy. This is the first time that such a young stellar formation region has been observed in the distant Universe, studying the physical mechanisms and conditions of star formation three billion years after the Big Bang. These results were published on May 7 in the journal Nature.
