Lattice QCD: a nonperturbative bridge from the pion mass to the strong coupling at tau and Z0 masses

I will report on how, from lattice QCD simulations including two light degenerate and two heavy quark flavours in the sea, a reliable estimate for the strong running coupling at tau and Z0 mass scales can be derived with the pion mass as a crucial ingredient taken from experiment.
