The aim of this internship is to start preparing the data analysis for the detection of the first clusters of galaxies in the Universe, which will happen with the experiments Simons Observatory (starting 2024) and CMB-S4 (starting 2032).

Galaxy clusters, located at the node of the cosmic web, are the largest gravitationally bound structures in the Universe. Their abundance and spatial distribution are very sensitive to cosmological parameters, such as the matter density in the Universe. Galaxy clusters thus constitute a powerful cosmological probe. They have proven to be an efficient probe in the last years (Planck, South Pole Telescope, XXL, etc.) and they are expected to make great progress in the coming years (Euclid, Vera Rubin Observatory, Simons Observatory, CMB-S4, etc.).

The cosmological power of galaxy clusters increases with the size of the redshift range covered by the catalogue. The Planck experiment detected the most massive clusters in the Universe between redshift z=0 and z=1. SPT and ACT experiments are more sensitive but covered less sky: they detected tens of clusters between z=1 and z=1.5, and a few clusters between z=1.5 and z=2. The next generation of instruments (Simons Observatory starting in 2024 and CMB-S4 starting in 2032) will routinely detect clusters between z=1 and z=2 and will observe the first clusters formed in the Universe between z=2 and z=3.

Only the experiments studying the cosmic microwave background will be able to observe the hot gas in these first clusters between z=2 and z=3, thanks to the SZ effect, named after its discoverers Sunyaev and Zel’dovich. This effect is due to high energetic electrons of the gas, which distorts the frequency spectrum of the cosmic microwave background, and is detectable in current experiments. But the gas is not the only component emitting in galaxy clusters: galaxies inside the clusters can also emit in radio or in infrared, contaminating the SZ signal. This contamination is weak at redshift below z=1 but increases drastically with redshift. One expects that the emission from radio and infrared galaxies in clusters are of the same order of magnitude as the SZ signal between z=2 and z=3.

One thus needs to understand and model the emission of the gas as a function of redshift, but also the emission of radio and infrared galaxies inside the clusters to be ready to detect the first clusters in the Universe.

Irfu/DPhP developed the first tools for detecting clusters of galaxies in cosmic microwave background data in the 2000s. These tools have been used successfully on Planck data and on ground-based data, such as the data from the SPT experiment. They are efficient at detecting clusters of galaxies whose emission is dominated by the gas, but their performance is unknown when the emission from radio and infrared galaxies is significant.

The goal of this M2 internship is to start to study and model radio and infrared emission of galaxies in clusters detected in the cosmic microwave background data (Planck, SPT and ACT), as a function of redshift. This modeling will be crucial to characterize the impact of this emission on the current cluster extraction tools, and to prepare the future generation of extraction tools.

This M2 internship is expected to continue with a thesis https://adum.fr/as/ed/voirproposition.pl?site=adumR&matricule_prop=51992

A dark matter detection experiment is currently being built on the CEA Saclay site. If dark matter is made of axions, intense magnetic fields could convert them into electromagnetic signals. The internship aims at optimizing the radiometer between 10 GHz and 30 GHz. It consists of a horn antenna, an amplification chain and signal processing units. The work will lead to a precise estimate of the sensitivity of the whole expériment. To do so, measurements will be performed with dedicated cryogenic test benches and the data analysis code will be used and optimized.

The CMS group of CEA Paris-Saclay is looking for motivated candidates to work on Higgs boson pair production in the bbtautau channel. They will look into the optimisation of the trigger selection for an analysis using Run 3 data, aiming at constraining the Higgs boson self-coupling.

The observation of the Higgs boson in 2012 confirmed the validity of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics, as it was established in the 1960’s. More precisely, it confirmed that of the Brout-Englert-Higgs mechanism, which explains how the W and Z bosons, and by extension the other fundamental particles, acquire their mass. The SM validity has been strengthened since then, through a decade of more and more precise measurements of the properties of this scalar boson – mass, decay width, couplings... – by the ATLAS and CMS Collaborations. However, an important property of the Higgs boson has yet to be measured: its self-coupling. In the SM, this parameter is fixed by the Higgs boson mass and the vacuum expectation value v, that are now both precisely known. Measuring the Higgs self-coupling would therefore provide a strong closure test of the SM or, if the measured value does not correspond to the predicted one, it could bring answers to some of the great open questions in particle physics. For instance, considering the measured value of the Higgs boson mass – to a per-mille precision –, the self-coupling becomes negative at high energy scales, allowing for a new, lower energy vacuum state to appear, that can be reached through tunnelling. Moreover, the Higgs field is a great tool for the study of inflation in the early universe, and a measured deviation of the Higgs self-coupling value with respect to the SM prediction could contribute to explaining the origin of the observed the matter-antimatter asymmetry. Measuring this parameter is therefore one of the current priorities of the ATLAS and CMS collaborations.

Run 3 of the LHC started in 2022, and already allowed the CMS experiment to collect 60/fb of proton-proton collision data at a center-of-mass energy of sqrt(s) = 13.6 TeV. Data-taking will continue until 2025, and should allow to bring the recorded luminosity to more than 150/fb, effectively doubling the available statistics from the previous Run at sqrt(s) = 13 TeV. This new dataset constitutes an excellent opportunity to improve analyses aiming at constraining the Higgs self-coupling. The best constrains on this parameter are obtained through the study of Higgs boson pair production (HH), where the self-coupling appears directly in Leading Order (LO) diagrams. However, HH production is an extremely rare process, with a total cross-section about 10 times smaller than that of single-Higgs-boson production.

Among the many possible decay modes of the HH pair, the HH->bbtautau channel is particularly interesting in Run 3. Thanks to its favourable branching ratio of 7.3 %, and to its moderate background contamination, it is among the three most sensible channels to the Higgs self coupling. It is also the channel that benefits from the most technical improvements in analyses techniques, especially through the recent introduction of new identification algorithms for b-quark initiated jets and tau leptons, and several directions are already well identified to improve further the sensitivity of upcoming analyses.

The student will take part in the development of an analysis using data collected by CMS during Run 3 of the LHC, aiming at constraining the Higgs boson self coupling through the study of HH production, with one H decaying into a pair of b-quarks, and the other one into a pair of tau leptons. They will study the impact on the analysis sensitivity of new trigger algorithms implemented online in 2022 and 2023, as well as the optimisation of the analysis selection and event categorisation accordingly.

Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes (IACT) observe Very High Energy gamma-ray (VHE) emission from astrophysical sources. To be able to perform this task, the telescope detects the Cherenkov light emitted by the atmospheric showers created by the gamma-rays entering the atmosphere. LST-1 is a prototype telescope for the Large Size Telescope of Cherenkov Telescope Array, the next generation instrument of IACTs that will extend the energy range and improve the sensitivity up to one order of magnitude compared to current experiments.

One of the challenges of the IACT observation technique is to be able, from the image taken by the telescope, to determine the direction, the energy but also the type of particles that has created the atmospheric shower. This analysis step is called reconstruction and is crucial for the performance of the instrument. A usual technique to perform this is to use the so-called Hillas method. It consists in the extraction of parameters from the image. These parameters are then provided to a random forest algorithm in order to determine the parameters of the particle that has created the shower.

The Hillas method associated with random forests has shown its robustness across time and is currently used by several experiments like MAGIC, VERITAS, and CTA. But the use of random forests has also some drawbacks, like overfitting, their size, … The objective of this internship will be to explore other machine learning algorithms like neural networks to replace the random forests in the reconstruction step of the analysis for CTA/LST-1 and compare the obtained physical performance to the current solution.

The candidate is expected to be familiar with the python language. Some knowledge about data science and machine learning will be an advantage.

H.E.S.S. is a system of Imaging Atmospheric Cherenkov Telescopes that investigates cosmic gamma rays in the energy range from 10s of GeV to 10s of TeV. The name H.E.S.S. stands for High Energy Stereoscopic System, and is also intended to pay homage to Victor Hess , who received the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1936 for his discovery of cosmic radiation. H.E.S.S. is located in Namibia, near the Gamsberg mountain, an area well known for its excellent optical quality. The first of the four telescopes of Phase I of the H.E.S.S. project went into operation in Summer 2002. A much larger fifth telescope - H.E.S.S. II - is operational since July 2012, further improving sensitivity, extending the energy range and allowing for very rapid reactions to transient events. The H.E.S.S. observatory is operated by an international collaboration of more than 170 scientists, from 32 scientific institutions and 12 different countries.

Since the first direct detections of Gravitational Waves in 2015, a new field of astrophysics and a new window to the universe is opening up: multi-messenger astrophysics. In this novel domain, we are combining information from various observatories across the electromagnetic spectrum with data obtained from gravitational wave observatories and high-energy neutrino telescopes. In August 2017, Virgo and LIGO detected the first gravitational waves emitted by the merger of a binary neutron star system. The subsequent detection of the same event across a large range of the electromagnetic spectrum is a major milestone in the field and produced a wealth of new information (and new questions) about these violent events. The H.E.S.S. collaboration is actively participating in these follow-up observations of Gravitational Waves and other exciting events like Gamma-Ray Burst, high-energy neutrinos, Fast Radio Bursts, etc. Fabian Schüssler, the tutor for the internship proposed here, leads the dedicated working group within the H.E.S.S. collaboration.

During the internship we will analyze data obtained by the H.E.S.S. instrument in recent target-of-opportunity observations. The gravitational wave interferometers Virgo, LIGO, and KAGRA are currently taking data and exciting observations are being conducted across the full multi-wavelength range. We will thus have an extensive dataset at our disposal to search for very-high energy counterparts to the multi-messenger signals.
The tutor is also leading the platform Astro-COLIBRI (cf. https://astro-colibri.science). Contributions to the development of the platform or its use for additional observations will thus be possible during the internship.

The proposed internship is a very good introduction to the PhD thesis topic proposed by F. Schussler at IRFU/CEA Paris-Saclay. Start of the PhD project is October 2024. Details can be found on: https://www.multimessenger-astronomy.com

Data from the ATLAS experiment at the CERN LHC can be used for precise measurements of the parameters of the Standard Model, such as the mass and width of the Z boson. These will be estimated using a statistical analysis and a specific muon calibration.
The ATLAS detector is one of the four large experiments at the CERN’s Large Hadron Collider, located near Geneva. Among the many topics being studied by the collaboration, precision tests of the Standard Model (SM) of particle physics check for the consistency of this theory. The mass of the Z boson is one of the fundamental parameters of the SM. It has been precisely measured at LEP, CERN’s previous collider, but ATLAS data contains hundreds of millions of Z bosons, two orders of magnitude more than LEP data, making it possible to reach similar precision despite the more challenging experimental conditions. The Z boson mass is best measured using its decay to two muons. In order to precisely calibrate the momentum scale of muons, the J/psi resonance is used, a meson also decaying to two muons and which mass is very precisely known.
The main goal of this internship will be to study the sensitivity of a Z boson width measurement with the ATLAS detector and its interplay with the Z boson mass measurement, currently in preparation. Statistical analyses floating only the width or the mass will be performed, as well as floating both at the same time, including all systematic uncertainties, especially those related to muon momentum scale and resolution.

The central region of the Milky Way may host an unresolved population of sources that could explain high-energy gamma-ray diffuse emissions. Ground-based Cherenkov telescope observations are unique for their possible detection and interpretation.
Current ground-based atmospheric Cherenkov telescopes demonstrated to be able to survey large regions of the sky at high sensitivity. The H.E.S.S. array performed the first survey of the Galactic Center (GC) region in very-high-energy gamma rays providing an unprecedented view at these energies and the forthcoming CTA aims to provide a deeper survey in the inner several degrees with one-order-of-magnitude improved sensitivity. The diffuse excess measured by Fermi-LAT known as the “Galactic Centre Excess” has been explained by WIMP annihilations in the dark matter Galactic halo. However, any diffuse contribution is subdominant and one possibly needs a population of discrete sources below detection threshold. Among the postulated candidates are a population of millisecond pulsars (MSP) and intermediate-mass black holes (IMBH) accreting dark matter. None of them is firmly detected as point-like sources although they would leave distinguishable imprints in the spatial fluctuations of the background. We aim to implement for the first time an analysis method to characterize background fluctuations in the H.E.S.S. Inner Galaxy Survey observations and search for spatial features expected from unresolved source populations in the center of the Milky Way. Such an analysis framework will prepare the upcoming CTA observations of the challenging GC region in very-high-energy gamma rays.
The goals of the internship are the following: i) Building the spatial and spectral VHE gamma-ray templates for the unresolved source population in the GC region; ii) Development of the high-level data analysis framework and determination of the relevant instrumental, analysis, phenomenological systematic uncertainties; iii) Search for MSP and IMBH populations in mock data of 20-year H.E.S.S. GC region dataset; iv) Sensitivity reach for the GC survey of the future CTA.

This M2 internship, followed by a PhD thesis, aims at studying two possible paths to improve the sensitivity of the analysis published on Run 2 data for the publication of results on Run3 data, regarding the constraints on ttH and tH production and on the CP properties of the H-tt coupling.
Ten years ago, the ATLAS and CMS experiments at LHC at CERN discovered a new boson, with a dataset of proton-proton collisions of about 10 fb-1 at the centre of mass energy of 7 to 8 TeV. Since then, the properties of this particle have been tested by both experiments and are compatible with the Higgs boson properties predicted by the Standard Model of particle physics (SM) within the uncertainties. In absence of direct probes of New Physics, increasing the accuracy of the measurements of the properties of the Higgs boson (its spin, its parity and its couplings to other particles) remains one of the most promising path to pursue.
The measurement of the ttH production allows the direct access to the top quark Yukawa coupling, fundamental parameter of the SM. ttH production is a rare process, two orders of magnitude smaller than the dominant Higgs boson production by gluon fusion. This production mode has been observed for the first time in 2018 separately by the CMS and ATLAS experiments, by combining several decay channels. More recently, with the full Run 2 dataset (data recorded between 2016 and 2018, with a total of 138 fb-1 at 13 TeV), this production mode was observed also using solely the diphoton decay channel, and a first measurement of its CP properties was provided again by both experiments, with the exclusion of a pure CP odd state at 3s. The associated production with a single top quark is about 5 times smaller than the ttH production and has never been observed. Thanks to the searches in the diphoton and multilepton channel, very loose constraints on this production modes were set for the first time recently. This production mode is very sensitive to the H-tt coupling CP properties, since in case of CP-odd coupling, its production rate is largely increased. We propose in the thesis following this internship to study jointly the two production modes (ttH and tH) and the H-tt coupling CP properties with Run 3 data (data being recorded now and until 2026, with potentially about 250 fb-1 at 13.6 TeV) in the diphoton decay channel. If there was some CP violation in the Higgs sector, excluding small pseudo-scalar contributions will require more data. Pursuing these studies with Run 3 and beyond may allow to pinpoint small deviations not yet at reach. We propose to bring several improvements to the Run 2 analysis strategy and to use novel reconstruction and analysis techniques based on deep-learning in order to make the most of the available dataset. During the internship, the Run2 data will be used to assess two possible paths to improve the sensitivity of the analysis using machine learning techniques.

The goal of the Gbar experiment is to study the gravity on antihydrogen. The production of antihydrogen is based on a beam of antiprotons produced by the Accelerator Division (AD) and the decelerator Elena at CERN, and secondly, a beam of positrons produced by a Linac. The positrons are initially cooled in a gas-filled electromagnetic trap (Buffer Gas Trap, BGT), then accumulated at high density in a high-field electromagnetic trap (HFT) before being accelerated to 4 keV and focused onto a nanoporous silica target. Simulations are required to understand and optimize the plasma ejections, as well as its behavior within the accelerating and focusing electrode system. The work will involve modeling the ejection, acceleration, and focusing of particles, comparing the results with measurements taken in Gbar. Several ideas could be explored to enhance transfer efficiency, for example pre-accelerating the positrons to a few keV right from the HFT, using a series of accelerating electrodes to make acceleration more continuous, or modifying the geometry of the focusing lenses
